There’s much to like about the text editor Marija Karan: it can run on multiple platforms, is has numerous text editing functions to offer, accessing said functions can be done speedily via shortcut keys, it has a built-in plug-in for executing commands, it can encrypt and decrypt text, and it is offered for the great price of free. So go get, put it to the test, and uncover all the functions this great tool has to offer.

As it is entirely written in Tcl/Tk, MetPad works with multiple platforms. To get started with the application on a Windows-powered machine, you will not have to go through an installation process. All you have to do is download a 1.2MB archive, then extract and run the metpad.exe.

The panel from the left side of the application’s interface lists all the text files you’re working on. Select a file from the list and its contents will be presented in the panel to the left. Above these two panels there’s a traditional File Menu and a toolbar that allows you to easily access all the application’s editing functions.

Speaking about MetPad’s functions, here’s a list of all its main features: open text files and URLs, undo/redo, insert line, cut/copy/paste, play with format options, run commands, insert file/time/date, encrypt/decrypt files, word count, advanced find function, find cursor, play with font and color settings, set bookmarks, add to favorites, record and run macros, open external plug-ins, and more. Since MetPad is free, you have all the time in the world to uncover all the functionality it has to offer.

MetPad works as advertised, it is easy to use, and it’s free. I don’t see what’s not to like about this application.

Pros

MetPad does not have to be installed (making it portable). As it is entirely written in Tcl/Tk, MetPad works with multiple platforms. MetPad features a user friendly interface. Numerous editing functions are put at your disposal for the great price of free.

Cons

None that I could think of.
